SANDSTONE

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock composed mainly of lithified quartz grains ranging in size from 0.06 mm to 2 mm. It may also contain small proportions of other minerals such as feldspar, mica and rock fragments. The grains may be close together, forming a compact rock, or sparsely distributed, creating a porous rock.

Characteristics of sandstone

The sandstones consist of lithified quartz grains between 0.06 mm and 2 mm in size. A small proportion of other mineral grains such as feldspar, mica and rock fragments may also be present. The grains may be close together to form a compact rock or sparsely distributed to form a porous rock.

Uses of Sandstone

In the oil industry, especially if it contains a high percentage of porosity and if it is permeable, it becomes particularly important as it can function as hydrocarbon reservoirs, storing large quantities of hydrocarbons. Hydrogeologically, this can also constitute huge groundwater stores in the form of aquifers.
